Exactly what is hypnobirthing?

Hypnobirthing is a method of preparation for labour in which women learn breathing and specifically designed techniques to help them reach a state of deep relaxation during childbirth. In this state it is considered that a woman is more likely to maintain the calm and strength of mind which can help her to control her mind and body’s response to pain and anxiety; therefore potentially resulting in a shorter, less painful and more relaxed birthing experience for both mother and baby.

Hypnobirthing sounds a bit alternative for me - is it really worth my time?

At Bump to Cradle we believe in offering balanced and comprehensive antenatal preparation for our parent’s to be. But we also trust in the research and pride ourselves in offering evidence-based information and guidance. Much of the latest research supports the idea that, for many women, hypnobirthing techniques allow them to labour for longer without medical intervention for pain relief and to cope with a longer labour with less stress. Since it is also widely recognised by medical professionals that the less stress the mother encounters during labour, the more relaxed the baby will be at birth, as far as we’re concerned, it’s a valuable and medically valid approach to birth preparation. Since the Bump to Cradle course is delivered by a registered midwife, we also hope that you will benefit from an approach which is both holistic and realistic in its premise.

What if I’m having a planned c-section - or I end up having a highly medicalised birth with induction/forceps or similar. Will I have wasted my time?

The beauty of the hypnobirthing techniques is that they facilitate a calm state of mind and a sense of control for the mother. If you end up in surgery for any reason (planned or otherwise), as long as you are still conscious, then the hypnobirthing techniques will help you. There are many stories of women who used their hypnobirthing breathing to see them through stressful interventions such as epidurals, spinal blocks and receiving stitches after labour.

What is the KG hypnobirthing course?

Hypnobirthing is a complete birth education programme, that teaches simple but specific self hypnosis, relaxation and breathing techniques for a better birth. On the Bump to Cradle Hypnobirthing Course our resident midwife Laura will teach the KG Hypnobirthing course which is centred around the five Cs of hypnobirthing:

Confidence: When you feel confident, you relax and work with your body in the way nature intended.

Control: With the knowledge you have, you are enabled to take control of how you give birth.

Choice: When you feel in control, the choices you make are the best choices for you and for your baby.

Calm: When you feel calm throughout the birth you are relaxed and your mind and body work together in harmony.

Comfort: The result is that your body works efficiently and comfortably.

The practical details?

The BTC Hypnobirthing course is taught in two consecutive Saturdays at St. Pauls Church, Southville. Both Saturdays will begin with a light bite to eat, provided by us, and the chance to meet and chat with Laura and your fellow hypnobirthing couples. There will be a break for lunch which you bring for yourselves.

We will provide one yoga mat per couple but please bring your own pillow. We suggest that mum-to-be wears comfy clothing for lying on the floor. Partners will not need any equipment.

No BTC course would be complete without a selection of goodies to take away with you, and with the Hypnobirthing course you will receive the following gifts in your BTC cotton tote:

  • The KGHypnobirthing course materials to allow you to continue your practice at home and, when the time comes, during your birth.

  • A Bump to Cradle tote bag with a selection of goodies to help support you and your baby throughout the rest of your pregnancy and hypno-birth.
